Devotional: Daily Examen

Contributed by: Emily Paterson and Kirstin Cant, Diocese of Auckland

The daily examen is a way of prayerfully reflecting on your day. You are invited in four steps (presence, gratitude, review and response) to concentrate on the experiences and encounters from the past 24 hours in order to increase your awareness of God’s presence with you and discern his direction for you.

  1. Presence: Ask God for light to look at your day with God’s eyes, not merely your own.
  2. Gratitude: Looking back over the past 24 hours, what are you most grateful for? What makes you thankful? Using simple words, express your gratitude to God.
  3. Review: Carefully look back on the day just completed, being guided by the Holy Spirit. When or where were you cooperating most fully with God’s action in your life? When were you resisting? What habits and life patterns do you notice from the past day?
  4. Response: Beginning today, how do you want to live your life differently? What patterns do you want to keep living tomorrow?
