Community Builders: Give Them a Hand

Contributed by: Phil Trotter

givethemahandSBuild positive self-esteem with this easy-to-run activity.

Pre-make paper hands, or have each participant trace their own hand on a piece of paper and tape it to their back. Then the whole group walks around and individuals write a one word POSITIVE description of the person whose back they are writing on, e.g. nice, fun, kind, generous, helpful, etc…

Leaders circulate to quietly monitor what is being written and add their own positive words especially with young people who may not get a full ‘hand’. Allow enough time for everyone to receive five positive words.

Then have a few students come up front and read what everyone said about them. Or, for smaller groups, they can sit in a circle and everyone has a chance to share what was written (if they wish).
