Junior Youth: Shine Your Light

Contributed by: Charlie Baker, Diocese of Auckland, 23 October 2017

‘Shine Your Light’ is the sixth and final session in a teaching series called ‘Light/Dark’. Throughout this series, your youth will discover more about Jesus as the Light of the World, his victory over darkness on the cross, and the transforming power of his light in our lives… all through the lens of Star Wars!

Key Scripture: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:14-15

You will need: AV equipment, wrapped mini chocolate bars/lollies or other ‘treasure (hide these in your youth space beforehand), whiteboard/paper, pens, Bibles

Engage – Star Wars in Real Life

Watch Star Wars Subway Car

Say: Isn’t it weird how what seems totally normal on a Star Wars film set, seems so out of place in the real world? Sometimes we feel a bit like that with our faith – what seems totally normal when we’re with other Christians, can feel a bit ‘out of place’ when we’re not. That’s because we are the light shining in the darkness, so we are different – and sometimes it will feel like we are standing out. And that’s a good thing, because – like Jesus – we are shining God’s light in a dark world.

Group Teaching – YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Ask someone to read Matthew 5:14-15: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven.”

Say: Jesus says that we are the light of the world. His light shines in you. It’s a light that other people need to see: your friends, your family, your neighbours – they need Jesus’ light to shine in their darkness, into the dark corners of their lives and of their world. Jesus is shining in you and he will use you to bring his beautiful light into their lives.

Ask: What are some ways we can shine our light?  (Brainstorm ideas together)

Activity and Discussion – Hidden Treasure

Tell your group that you have hidden something in the room, and send them on a quick treasure hunt to find the hidden chocolate bars. When all the chocolates have been found, get into small groups and discuss:

  • Why do people hide things?
  • Jesus said, “People don’t light a lamp and cover it with a bowl, instead they put it on stand.” Why might we hide our light?
  • What are some ways we might hide our light?

Wrap up by encouraging them to shine their lights, reflecting back some of their ideas from the discussions above.

Response – Shining Lights

Brainstorm ideas and make a plan for a practical way they can shine their lights as a group. If you are looking for inspiration, try some of these outreach ideas.
