Social Media and Apps

An interactive activity to help young people reflect on their use of social media and apps in light of what the Bible says. Perfect for both individuals and groups of young people.

Using the online quiz tool, Kahoot, create a quiz to help them unpack their response to the following verses. Get them to rank themselves from 1-6 for each verse using the scale below, then follow up by unpacking and discussing their answers (perhaps over multiple sessions).

When I read these verses, and think about the way I’m living, using my phone, social media and apps, I feel like this:
1 = The app’s I’m using or the way I use social media hard out matches this Bible verse.
2 = Some of what I’m using and doing connects with this Bible verse.
3 = What I’m using and doing is more neutral – not building connections but not pulling away either.
4 = The way I’m working and what I’m using probably is not that great.
5 = Now I stop and think about it, I think I’ll either uninstall the App or just stop doing it.
6 =  Yep, it’s not good, but I think I’m a bit addicted to it, and I’m not sure I can stop tbh.

Bible verses & Questions for Reflection

Matthew 28:19-20
Marks of Mission 1 and 2 are built on this Scripture. Jesus told his apostles, “As you go, disciple all nations…”.
This verse tells us to disciple other people wherever we go:  if we go across the oceans, we should look to make disciples;  if we go across the street, we should be trying to make disciples; if we go online, we should seek to make disciples. How am I going with this?

1 Timothy 4:12
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
What kind of example am I leaving with the apps I use, what I post and view? Do I follow and fit in, or lead by example?

Philippians 4:8-9
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
How much time do I spend being quiet and even off social media? When I am on social media, what am I following or posting?

1 Timothy 6:20
O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge.”
How am I going with that?

1 John 2:15-18
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
