Christmas & Easter: Carbon Fast for Lent

Contributed by: Jocelyn Czerwonka, Diocese of Waiapu

Lent is the time when we remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, facing challenge and temptation. It is a time when we reflect on God’s purpose for our life. Many youth groups take this opportunity to encourage young people to fast from treats like Coke or chocolates or to take time off from social media. But instead, why not give them the challenge of doing a carbon fast – to reduce the things we do which damage God’s Creation. By reducing their use of petrol, electricity, plastic, paper, water and toxins, they can be empowered to take small steps for a more sustainable world, and in doing so discover a different relationship with God, with Creation and with one another.
