Reflective Prayers: Love the Lord Your God – Worship Stations

Contributed by: Charlie Baker and Karen Spoelstra, Diocese of Auckland

loveworshipstationsThese seven worship stations work well as part of a youth group session, a youth or all age service, or camp. Adapt the wording as needed to suit your situation.

You may like to begin with a discussion or message about God’s love and worship being our response of love to His love, using the following:

  • “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Matthew 22:37)
  • “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19)
  • Get two leaders/youth to perform the dramatic reading, “God So Loved

Beforehand, set up the following worship stations around your room. Invite your youth to quietly and worshipfully move around each of the stations. They need to start with station 1, and then they can move around the remaining stations in their own time and in any order. If you have a larger group, split them into small groups and stagger their start times. Play some quiet worship music in the background.

Station 1: “Love Confessions”

You will need: Station 1 instructions, a bowl of water, stones (enough for one per person), and a small towel.

In silence, think about the [day/week] that is ending

Jesus said “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39

Select a stone.  Hold it firmly in your fist as you think back over the ups and downs of the day. Think about the things you have thought and said. Think about the things you have done, and the things you have not done. Think about the times when you have loved and have not loved. Let the stone represent what you want to leave behind. Wash your stone. Add it to the cairn.

“If you confess your sin God is faithful and just and will forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Station 2: “Love the Lord your God”

You will need: Station 2 instructions, a laptop/tablet with headphones, ‘Life with God’ video clip, small pieces of paper/card, pens

Watch the video, “Life with God”

Jesus shows us the reality of God’s

  • Mercy
  • Love
  • Relationship
  • Life
  • Acceptance
  • Connection
  • Forgiveness
  • Purpose
  • Grace

Do you find it hard to believe that God wants to give these things to you? On a card, write a word from the list above that you want God to show you. Spend some time asking God to the speak the truth of that word to you.

Station 3: “with all your mind”

You will need: Station 3 instructions

“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (Ex. 34:6)
“As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.” (Ps. 18:30)
“Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty – he is the King of glory.” (Ps. 24:10)

Slowly read these verses again. What do these verses tell you about who God is?
Read the verses again. This time, find a word or a phrase about God that stands out to you. Repeat these words in your mind, memorise them.
Now, take a few moments in silence and meditate on who our God is. Spend some time praising Him for who He is.

Station 4: “with all your heart”

You will need: Station 4 instructions, pens, A5 note cards (enough for one each)

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.” (1 John 4:16a)

There is nothing quite as amazing as a love letter from someone we love. We read each word carefully searching for hidden meaning. We scrutinize and memorize as we rejoice in every sentence every syllable.
In many ways the Bible is God’s love letter to us. It is a record of His work in the world and it is His way of reminding us of His love for us that He proved on the cross.
Take some time and come up with your own love letter to God. Write something original that expresses your love to God. It can be a poem or a paragraph or whatever you feel like saying. Take the note with you when you have finished.
(Note: for a younger group, you may like to leave the first paragraph out)

Station 5: “with all your soul”

You will need: Station 5 instructions, coloured paper (e.g. red), scissors, pencils, blu-tac

“He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” (Deut. 32:4)
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” (1 Cor. 14:33)
“Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.” (Lev. 19:2)
“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Tim. 1:17)
“To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.” (Job 12:13)
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Cut out a image or a graphic that represents these verses to you. Your image can stand alone or contribute to the growing picture already on the wall. Attach it to the wall with the blue tac provided. (Note: If you have a younger group, change this to drawing a picture and provide coloured pencils and plain paper.)

Station 6: “with all your strength”

You will need: Station 6 instructions, multiple copies of the action cards (enough for a few people to pick the same one)

Jesus said, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” (John 14:21)
Real love isn’t a feeling, it is action. Love is a verb. Real love for God is obeying his commands – this is love for God in action. Look at the actions on the cards below. They are each actions that require you to get out of your comfort zone and put love into action. Spend some time in prayer asking God to show you the person he’s inviting you to show love to. Take one of the cards and make sure you put this into action before the end of this [week/camp].

Action cards:

  • I will spend time with someone who needs a friend
  • I will spend time with someone in this youth group who I don’t know very well.
  • I will stop gossip when I hear it, and I will not pass it on to others.
  • When I see someone getting picked on I will step in and defend him/her
  • I will do something nice for my parents
  • I will share the truth about Jesus with my friends.
  • I will remember that my life is a picture of the gospel for others and I will live a life that points others to God.
  • I will choose to stay away from places and situations that can ruin my testimony to others
  • I will take an interest in how God’s love is being shared around the world

Station 7: “for all your days”

You will need: Station 7 instructions, laptop, data projector, screen, powerpoint loop of creation images

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” (Is. 6:3)

“One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” (Ps. 27:4)

Spend some time silently reflecting on the beauty of God in creation. How you can spend time worshipping God in the midst of your everyday life?
